i am majoring surrounded by english right presently, could i still pursue my occupation as a sports writer ?

yes, most definately.

Depending on how far along you are (in both your major and minor) you could take some extra-credit classes within journalism, since English and Journalism are not as far apart as, say, Anthropology and Criminal Justice.

You'll still need to catch some journalism experience under your belt somehow, depending on what kind of monthly you want to write for, if you want to be a sports columnist somewhere. If you want to write sports biographies, then most of that is doing the proper research and writing and submitting sample of it to various periodicals, surrounded by order to build up some field cred (since no publisher is going to embezzle a chance on someone whose never published anything sports-related anywhere, unless their prose is damn good, and that's vastly very rare.)

Figure out what munificent of sports writing you want to do and discuss it with your academic advisor (since they are the ones most feasible to know where you should be spending your time and energy.)
