Usually, yes because you're out of action there right now. Most of the time, when you're out on salaried leave (that is, you have ample vacation/sick time accrued that you are paid your full salary), the employer will cover its portion. But, if you've exhausted your donate and are not being paid your full remuneration (from the employer), then yes, the employer can do this.

Also, if you've exhausted your FMLA leave, you can be terminated and you would be eligible for COBRA (where you payment the entire premiums to be covered).
