Answers: you can be gainfully employed (work for a business) at the age of 14 in EVERY state. the hours are restricted and some states are stricter on which jobs you may perform but the law are generally the same everywhere within the US.
many businesses as a matter of policy don't hire those underneath 16 due to the restrictions and due to the experiences they have had hiring those 14 & 15 years-old. since most businesses are individually owned or operate (even national chains) the only way to know for sure who will hire you is to apply. the worse that can crop up is you don't get hired. there is also the issue of the discount, many jobs that be in the realm of teens and retirees are in a minute being taken by adults trying to support their families.
the businesses that are most of a mind and able to work within the legitimate parameters for minors are grocery stores and fast-food restaurants.
many minors hold poor work-ethic, are undependable, have numerous schedule request, own attendance problems and simply have an attitude of they are owed a job. you must be capable of show through your words and actions that you are different.
